History.
The Dark Lord rose to power in the 1970s, beginning to gather followers who were eager for a share. His closest followers, who took the mark, became known as Death Eaters. As the years passed, they became increasingly brazen, and times got more dangerous and violent, especially for Muggleborns and those who opposed him.

The Dark Lord's influence grew, and the Dark Mark was seen with increasing frequency over houses where the Death Eaters had murdered those inside. Hogwarts became one of the few safe places in the Wizarding World, but it would not last, and the resistance organized by Albus Dumbledore, the Order of the Phoenix, would not be able to overcome the greatest threat to the society as they knew it.

In October 1981, Voldemort, after having heard of the prophecy of the boy who would bring about his downfall, narrowed it down to one: the son of James and Lily Potter. Begged by Severus Snape to spare Lily, who he himself had tried to recruit, overlooking her blood status because of her talent and magical ability, the Dark Lord kept his word.

Killing James in a duel, he then set his sights on the infant he believed to be the child of the prophecy. When Lily tested his patience, refusing to stand aside, and shielding Harry, the Dark Lord threw her aside, knocking her unconscious, and killed the child with the same flash of green light that had been the downfall of so many.
Since then:

  • The Dark Lord has taken over everything. Top-ranking Ministry officials are like puppets to which he holds the strings, and the Death Eaters are everywhere.
  • The Order of the Phoenix and their resistance effort suffered a major blow with the deaths of Lily and James. The Longbottoms were never tortured to insanity by the Death Eaters, and continue to be involved in the resistance.
  • Hogwarts, too, fell to the control of Voldemort, and Dumbledore has had to go into hiding.
  • Muggleborns are hunted down. With control of Hogwarts and the Ministry, the Death Eaters have access to the list of magical children born each year, and can determine who was born to non-magical parents. These children have been hunted down and killed, to preserve the purity of the Wizarding race.
  • Gryffindor is no more. Seeing that most of the Wizards who caused him trouble were Gryffindors, including those who led the resistance effort against him, and knowing well the enmity between Salazar Slytherin and Godric Gryffindor, the Dark Lord dismantled the House. Instead, students are now sorted into either Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin. Gryffindor Tower has become an area for Prefects to have private suites of rooms, and is now called Peverell Tower.
  • Severus Snape teaches Defense Against the Dark Arts, or rather The Dark Arts. Horace Slughorn was easily persuaded to return as Potions Master, given the power that the Dark Lord had, probably fearing for his own skin. His group of favorites reflects the change in times, and consists largely of students from old families, with ties to Death Eaters, or both.
  • The Hogwarts Curriculum has basically become as it was in Deathly Hallows, given the Dark Lord's control of the school. He has placed Amycus Carrow as Headmaster, and the Governors are all among his supporters. The following is the selection of courses taught, and the list of faculty:
    Ancient Runes (Bathsheba Babbling)
    Arithmancy (Septima Vector)
    Astronomy (Aurora Sinistra)
    Charms (Filius Flitwick)
    The Dark Arts (Severus Snape)
    Divination (Sibyll Trelawney)
    Herbology (Pomona Sprout)
    History of Magic (Cuthbert Binns)
    Muggle Studies (Alecto Carrow)
    Potions (Horace Slughorn)
    Transfiguration (Minerva McGonagall)
    Head of Hufflepuff: Pomona Sprout
    Head of Ravenclaw: Filius Flitwick
    Head of Slytherin: Severus Snape
    Deputy Headmistress: Minerva McGonagall
    Headmaster: Amycus Carrow
  • Some students, who have parents who are secretly part of the resistance, such as Neville Longbottom, for example, have organized within the walls of the school a Student Resistance, which passes information to what remains of the Order of the Phoenix, through the Room of Requirement and Hog's Head Inn.

Character Backstory.
Some characters have backstory associated with them. These characters are mostly NPCs, but we've compiled a list here for your reference.
Marcus Flint. Slytherin Chaser and Captain. Dated Morag MacDougal from 1992-1995, with ten break-ups between Marc's infidelity and Morag's paranoia that he'd cheated again.
Bathilde de Lapin. French witch from Beauxbatons who was involved with Theodore Nott from about the end of the Quidditch World Cup in 1994 until late November that year, when he spotted her practically mid-smooch with Boris Poliakoff, of Durmstang.
Alexander Montague. Went to the Yule Ball with Asteria Greengrass. She lit his hair on fire when he tried to make a pass at her.
Boris Poliakoff. Durmstang student who visited Hogwarts with the school during the Triwizard Tournament (1994-1995). Fought with Theodore Nott (or, rather, was tackled by him) in late November.
Hector Vaisey. Slytherin Chaser and Captain. Dated Asteria Greengrass when "dating" consisted of holding hands -- the two are still friends, which doesn't stop him from leaving her copies of Wyatt poems from time to time.
