Frequently Asked Questions.

What is this whole "alternate universe" thing?
This game takes place in a world where Harry Potter was killed on that fateful night in 1981. Instead of killing Lily after he had defeated James, Voldemort threw her aside, knocking her unconscious, and killed Harry. With no protection against the Avada Kedavra spell, Harry died. Voldemort has since become more powerful than ever, more powerful than anyone could ever have imagined. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry has become the Hogwarts School for Witches and Wizards. Muggleborns are no longer allowed to attend school—they have been all but eradicated, as the Death Eaters have hunted them down and killed almost all of them. Wizarding society has reached a new pinnacle of decadence.
What canon details do apply?
Everything, up until October 1981 is the same. Characterizations, family situations, etc, should be about the same. In other words, people like Draco Malfoy or Pansy Parkinson are not going to jump up to defend Muggleborns. In fact, they would still be disdainful of them, just like Blaise Zabini is not going to go chasing the skirts of blood traitors.
God modding, power playing, ooc drama, etc.
Don't do it. Each player controls their own characters. Work plots out with other players and don't assume that characters will react to something in a particular way, get hit by things, etc. If you have problems with each other, try to work them out, and just remember to be nice. Ask a mod if you need help.
When does this game take place?
The game begins in 1996. Characters who would have been in Harry Potter's class are now sixth years.
Which characters are available? Can I play…?
We want the game to start off small, and focus on character development. We have put up a character slate, here, for you to choose from. Eventually, we may add more characters.
What is the student resistance?
In this Alternate Universe, there are resistance groups, like the Order, who continue to meet in secret and plan to try to change things, though they have not been very successful. The student resistance is made up of students who are likely to lean that way, who also meet in secret and provide intel to the Order from inside Hogwarts. If you want your character to be part of it, let us know and we'll be happy to add them (unless there is canon evidence that they probably wouldn't be involved in something like that; then you'll kind of have to explain why they would be).
Why isn't the Slug Club membership identical to the one in the books?
Horace Slughorn included students in his club that he thought would be leaders and could make connections. Remember, people like Avery, Nott, Snape, Lucius Malfoy, and even Voldemort himself were among his favorites. In this Alternate Universe, where what matters is blood purity and family connections, the Slug Club membership is very different.
Wait. What happened to Gryffindor?
Voldemort basically controls everything. Given the enmity between Gryffindor and Slytherin, and the fact that Voldemort saw that the "child of the prophecy" (he believes Harry Potter) had Gryffindor parents, plus Albus Dumbledore (the bane of his existence and resistance leader) was a Gryffindor, he decided it would be best to eliminate the house. The sorting hat has been charmed to sort students into either Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin—students who would normally have gone to Gryffindor have been placed in Hufflepuff (who said she would take all the rest, according to one of the hat's songs).
Can my character be on the Quidditch team?
Quidditch positions are assigned first come, first served, with preference given to students who were on the teams in canon. As per tradition, girls still cannot be on the team in Slytherin. For the Quidditch team rosters, click here.
Can my character be a prefect?
Like Quidditch positions, prefects are assigned first come, first served, with preference given to students who were prefects in canon. For the list of prefects, click here.
What classes are being taught at Hogwarts? Who is on the staff?
The curriculum is going to be the same as it was in Deathly Hallows, since Voldemort has control of the school, basically. The following are the classes (and professors who teach them):
Ancient Runes (Bathsheba Babbling)
Arithmancy (Septima Vector)
Astronomy (Aurora Sinistra)
Charms (Filius Flitwick)
The Dark Arts (Severus Snape)
Divination (Sibyll Trelawney)
Herbology (Pomona Sprout)
History of Magic (Cuthbert Binns)
Muggle Studies (Alecto Carrow)
Potions (Horace Slughorn)
Transfiguration (Minerva McGonagall)

Head of Hufflepuff: Pomona Sprout
Head of Ravenclaw: Filius Flitwick
Head of Slytherin: Severus Snape
Deputy Headmistress: Minerva McGonagall
Headmaster: Amycus Carrow
Snape's teaching The Dark Arts? What, is that like just for this year, or what? Because, you know, there's that whole "curse" thing...
A couple of things we've reasoned out on that. First, The Dark Lord controls EVERYTHING, except that teeny tiny resistance movement, so he has moved onto other things. He controls the school itself, so the curse, for all intents and purposes, has been lifted, and he hand-picked Snape to teach the course. Second, it's technically "The Dark Arts," and not "Defense Against the Dark Arts" anymore, so it could be argued that they're two separate courses -- you know, just as a backup reason, in case the first doesn't satisfy you (but we like the first one better).
What's this whole thing about the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord still being alive? Didn't you say Harry Potter was killed?
Some of you might have guessed the answer to this, and it figures heavily into our plot. In this Alternate Universe, we're taking advantage of the ambiguity of the prophecy... not that we want to give up too many of our plot details just yet, of course.
